Capillarity

Last night I was at a local mixer when a young man, Chris Contreras (@AustinVisMedia), came up to me and told me how much he enjoyed reading my blog. Thank you Chris, you have no idea how energizing it is to hear that what we do/write makes a difference; that someone is actually listening.

I often teach my clients not to worry if we post content to their various social sites and don’t see a response.  It all starts when we make the decision to share.  I share here on my blog and I hope that it’s being read. If I had no blog, it’s a 100% certainty that no one will hear my thoughts.

I’m amazed at times how I come in to contact with people who have ready my stuff. Chris is a good example. He tapped me on the shoulder and when I turned to see who it was (expecting it to be a familiar face) he put out his hand for me to shake. In that moment, we engaged in a dialog that would never have transpired if he had not discovered my writing.

After introductions, we connected over content, exchanged cards and made plans to meet up at a later date. We strengthened the connection later on twitter, where we continued to discuss our plans to have coffee or lunch.

This gives me an idea. Even the smallest connections, a tweet, an email, a handshake can lead to anywhere. I saw a message today go out over twitter, “It’s funny how one small conversation can start a lifelong friendship.” Thanks @adamglennyoung. I agree!

If you’re reading this, don’t be silent. Comment. Even if it’s just to say, “Hi.”  You never know how much even the slightest acknowledgement can make the biggest difference.
